Winter, from 1923, forms part of the Secrets of Nature documentary series. Patterns of seasonal shift begin with the drifting pathway of a single falling leaf. Branches are silhouetted against sky, and the smoothly pulsating spines of a hedgehog in hibernation are followed by close-in camera focus on passing hooves, a wheel and a churned furrow. Use of time-lapse techniques make visible the patterning of frost across a spiders web and the blindly spreading underground pathways of roots. The drip of icicle spikes, and the blossoming of budding ivy, are set against the insistently rhythmic pulsation of growing grass.
