Tartans of the Scottish Clans, directed in 1906 by G.A. Smith, takes the form of a promotional film for specialist cloth manufacturers. Shot in incongruously luminous colour, a silent progression of samples, in subtly varying shades and patternings, fills the screen. Identified by name in the top left corner, the red and green of Drummond is slowly and awkwardly lifted by unseen means, slanting away to reveal an underlying sample of bleached-out McPherson, followed by MacBeth and MacDuff . The vivid triple threading of rich MacDuff reds gives way to light and dark green Gordon checks, Bruce, Logan and the large red squares of MacGregor.
