Mick Nicholls’ Rush Hour, from 1970, condenses morning commuter congestion at Waterloo Rail Station into a three minute time-lapse portrait. The work begins with the ticking of the black-rimmed station clock, set among the levers and light-flashing of the control room. Lone figures, drinking tea or checking departure boards, mark fixed visual points as a blurred stream of humanity spills through iron gates and across the station concourse, with the sinuous pathways of track-switching trains captured from static, overhead vantage points.
